Why Mushrooms Improve Longevity

Researchers have found that mushrooms are rich in vitamins and nutrients. Some even show promising anti-aging effects.

In 2019, studies revealed that people who consumed more mushrooms had lower rates for mild cognitive impairment. This may be attributable to an antiaging compound called L-Ergothioneine.

Human studies suggest that exercise could lower the dementia risk and delay its arrival, thereby helping to slow down the progression of Alzheimer's.

Antioxidants

Mushrooms are an excellent source of antioxidants, and have been shown to protect against oxidative stress which is linked to many diseases like cancer. Antioxidants help slow and stop cell damage caused by free radicals by neutralizing them; additionally mushrooms contain beta-glucans which have been found to promote immune system health; one serving can contain 18 grams of antioxidants which is an ideal amount for healthy individuals.

Food Chemistry recently published a study which concluded that mushrooms are one of the top sources of two key antioxidants - ergosterol and glutathione - known to enhance healthspan and delay aging. A team of researchers at Pennsylvania State University analyzed different species in order that site to find the ones that are richest in these important nutrients. They found shiitakes to be higher in antioxidants than oyster or maitake varieties.

Mushrooms contain antioxidants and are rich in protein and fibre. Furthermore, they're low in calories, fat and cholesterol--making them an excellent replacement for red meat in weight-loss diets. They are also anti-inflammatory and selenium, a key nutrient in the immune system, is present.

The study also showed that eating mushrooms regularly can increase longevity. Those who consumed mushrooms at least twice a week were 7-15 percent more likely to live than those who ate mushrooms only occasionally or never. Researchers used data from the Chinese Longitudinal Healthy Longevity Survey, a population-based cohort with 13,156 Chinese older adult participants.

These findings are a timely reminder that mushrooms can be incorporated into your diet by adding them to foods you enjoy or eating them uncooked. Mushrooms contain essential nutrients like b vitamins, vitamin D and copper. They also contain potassium magnesium iron zinc zinc copper copper lycopene.

L-Ergothioneine

Ergothioneine is a powerful antioxidant found in mushrooms. As an unique sulfur-containing antioxidant it cannot be synthesized by humans and must come solely from food sources (fungi).

Ergothioneine may protect against cell damage by scavenging nitrogen and oxygen reactive species. It also modulates nuclear factor 2 (erythroid related factor 2) directly. Ergothioneine also plays a key role in maintaining telomeres; slowing down the decline of telomeres due to age or neurological diseases.

The consumption of mushrooms, especially three or more servings per week, has been shown to reduce mortality rates in comparison to those who consume mushrooms very rarely or not at all. This reduction is likely due to a decreased risk of cancer and cardiovascular disease as well as respiratory diseases and neurodegenerative conditions.

Ergothioneine's ability to prevent the accumulation of senescent (old) cells in the body is one of its many impressive benefits. These cells are a primary cause of age-related illnesses, premature aging and other diseases. Researchers have found that mushrooms rich in the antioxidant ergothioneine can help to eliminate senescent cell faster, reducing oxidative stress and thereby prolonging life expectancy.

Life Extension’s mushroomderived L'ergothioneine (Essential Youth) can support longevity in the body by improving glutathione, an antioxidative keystone. This antioxidant protects from oxidative injury and supports brain, vision, and heart health.

Anti-Inflammatory Properties

Inflammation is an integral component of immune responses in our bodies, but chronic inflammation can have detrimental effects. The medicinal mushroom's ability to inhibit the production of proinflammatory agents and defend against persistent inflammation has been studied.

Mushrooms also contain polysaccharides - bioactive ingredients that possess antimicrobials, antibiotics, immunomodulatory anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties. In addition, mushrooms contain various vitamins and minerals including Vitamin D, potassium B vitamin as well as dietary fibre.

Studies have shown that medicinal mushroom extracts rich in Ergothioneine, or ERGO can reduce inflammation and oxidative stresses while improving cognition, and physical performance. Cognition and locomotor function tend to decline with age leading to disease, disability, or death - thus research focusing on therapies which target inflammation/oxidative stress with an emphasis on strengthening immunity has proven fruitful.

Studies have revealed that certain mushrooms, including Hericium erinaceus (He2) and Grifola frondosa, possess mycelia rich in polyphenols that exhibit strong anti-inflammatory effects. These mushrooms are also known to reduce blood glucose levels, which can contribute to inflammation in diabetic patients.

Cordycepin is another powerful mushroom molecule that has been shown to reduce inflammation in mice and increase their longevity. This works to block the signals which cause diseases like rheumatoid arthritis, asthma and hepatitis.

Some mycelia from certain mushrooms possess antimicrobial properties. Some species can kill multidrug resistant bacteria, in vitro. Reishi and Cordyceps blazei Murill have shown to be effective in fighting various viruses and bacteria.

Add mushrooms as a delicious and nutritious way to boost your nutrition. However, avoid boiling or microwaving as this can strip them of their water-soluble nutrients, while sauteing and simmering are better ways of maintaining their health-promoting qualities. Mix chopped mushrooms with salads, scrambled eggs or omelets. Or add them to soups and stews.

Prebiotics

Mushrooms, a healthy food that is also a medical remedy, have been used by many cultures all over the world for ages. Mushrooms have low calories and fat, are high in fiber, and contain many essential vitamins, such as potassium selenium, and copper. They also contain a number of essential vitamins, including B-vitamins, and other nonnutritive substances that have attracted the attention of researchers because they possess antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, and immunomodulating properties. [2]

Prebiotics in mushrooms include a-, b, and c-glucans as well as mannans galactans and other short-chain carbohydrates. These polysaccharides can be found in a number of mushroom varieties, such as Lion's Mane or Chaga.

Studies have shown how mushroom bglucan can be used as a prebiotic. This is because it stimulates intestinal bacteria to multiply more quickly, such as Bifidobacterium.

Medicinal mushrooms have been proven to reduce inflammation within the body, strengthen intestinal linings and increase gut bacteria diversity; all which helps decrease chronic conditions like cardiovascular disease and diabetes (5).

Mushroom fungi also help maintain stable blood glucose levels and support weight loss by decreasing secretion of ghrelin - an appetite hormone responsible for hunger and overeating. Furthermore, mushrooms increase insulin production which serves to control blood sugar levels.

For maximum health benefits, choose organic, low glycemic mushrooms that are high in prebiotics like Cymbiotika's Organic Langevity Mussels. They have a liposomal formule with six potent medicinal fungi including Lion's Mane Chaga Reishi Maitake and Cordyceps.
